The International High Diving Institute (IHDI) was founded in 2021, by Ellie Smart to develop the sport of high diving within the USA and internationally. IHDI's focus is to provide training opportunities, host events, and creating a community for athletes, coaches, and fans. IHDI supports junior and senior levels in addition to technical and freestyle disciplines of high diving.
The International High Diving Institute inaugural project was building the USA's first high diving platform at the Utah Olympic Park. The platform officially opened July 2021, and had nine take-offs points: 3, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15. 17.5, 20, and 27 meters, making it a world record for the most platforms in a single structure. In addition, it’s the first training facility in the United States to have a platform higher than ten meters. It is also the first in the world to have platforms increasing by 2.5 meters from 3-20 meters, creating the optimal learning environment for complete beginners to pro athletes.
High Diving is a rapidly growing, adrenaline pumping, awe-inspiring sport in which the top athletes compete up to five flips and twists in less than 3 seconds. The sport gained popularity in 2009, with the debut of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. Since then, FINA adopted the sport in 2013 as an official discipline of diving. Men compete from 27 meters and women compete from 20 meters. In fact, high diving was the first sold out event at the 2019 World Championships and is being considered for inclusion in the 2024 / 2028 Olympic Games.
